Weekly ELA News 2/10 - 2/14

As our Science Fair dealines are fast approaching (see the Science Fair February Update blog post for more details), we had a lot to do this week in 6th ELA.  After completing various graphic organizers about our individual topics, students began their first drafts this week.  A first draft was due today (Friday, February 14th) and we spent some time meeting, sharing, and revising this morning in class.  It is my hope that students will spend some time working on their drafts this weekend.

By next Wednesday, I'd like students to have a typed draft done so that we can spend a day or two editing before the final drafts are due on Friday, February 21st.  EEeekkkk!!!  So exciting!  I can't wait to read them!

As you continue to work on your papers, students, remember the critera we set for what makes a good essay:
  • Grabber Lead - introduce the topic clearly and preview what is to come
  • Organize ideas - use headings, definitions, comparision/contrast, make sure the order of your ideas makes sense
  • Format and graphics can be helpful - but don't go overboard!  They can also be distracting if not used well.
  • Develop your topic - with facts, details, quotes, and examples
  • Transitions - flow from one topic to the next
  • Precise Language and Vocabulary - you've been learning such awesome words as you've researched...USE THEM!
  • Maintain a formal style - this is a research paper
  • Conclusion - should support your paper and tie back into your "So What?"  or your main idea
  • Demonstrate exemplary command of the English Language - use correct grammar, punctuation, conventions, etc.
  • And last but not least...Cite your sources!
Good luck authors!  Enjoy your writing!
