Weekly ELA News 2/11 - 2/15

As we now have reading Lit Circles well underway (we're still meeting 1-2 times weekly) to discuss our books, we're giving our writing attention to our upcoming Science project - the Science Fair!

Science Fair Papers

The Science Fair is fast approaching, and so is the deadline for our papers!  Rough drafts are due Wednesday, Feb. 20th and Final drafts are due Wednesday, Feb. 27th!    I want all students to be successful in this endeavor, so we've been spending time in 6th grade ELA working on our research papers.  After creating outlines students worked on "Grabber Leads" to get rid of those boring, "For my science fair project I studied...blah, blah, blah."  Students are drafting in class, sharing their work with others, receiving peer feedback as well as feedback from myself, and making great progress on their drafts.  I'm very excited about their work and how hard they are working!  We will continue working on these research papers in ELA for the next week or two before we move into speech writing.  Exciting times!!

We are beginning to use a new tool called “Goodreads” in ELA.  While it will be used for Lit. Circles here at first, the sky is the limit in using technology like this.  Goodreads.com is a website that allows users to rate books and write book recommendations.  Don’t worry, this isn’t another site for parents to check, but instead a tool for students to use in class as we get to know keyboarding, the internet, and books a little better.  To set up an account (which we will do during class time) students need an email.  I have a “classroom” email that I let students use for this kind of thing, if your child doesn't have and email or if you are not comfortable with them using their personal email.
If you want to check out Goodreads yourself, I highly encourage you to!  You can find a preview to my Goodreads page on our ELA tab of this website.  I think the students will enjoy the interface and it will give them a place to practice technology skills while talking about literature.
Please sign and return this permission slip that went home with students (by email and hard copy).  As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
