Homeroom Weekly News 5/21 - 5/25

Homeroom Parents, Students, and Community Members,
It’s Friday again!  It seems to get here so quickly now.  We only have one more true “Friday” left this year.  Here’s a little peek into what we’ve been up to this past week.
On Monday and Tuesday, I wasn’t here, but it looks as though students survived just fine without me.  (I went to Iowa for my sister’s college graduation.  It was wonderful, but I missed all of my students a lot!)  Being away brought to my attention how few days we have left together in our homeroom.  It's going by so quickly!

This past week, students worked on our last formal writing assessment.  It was an in-class assignment, on demand, and had to be written on the prompts provided.  Mr. Workentin, Mr. Oldham, and I all worked together to create the assignment to have some consistency across the grades.  (Look for more of that in the future too!  We’re so excited to have the summer to work together to make our classes stronger and more consistent.  We didn’t have that luxury this last year.)  I will be sending the assessment home upon completion (and scoring).  Be on the look-out for this piece.  It will come home with the project requirements and the rubric on which it was scored.  As with some of our bigger assignments, I will send home a slip for this one to be looked over by a parent or guardian, signed, and returned.

In homeroom this week, we also had the wonderful opportunity to experience Bump-up day together.  Building community together starts now and I wanted to express my thanks to all of our 6 and 7s who stepped up to be leaders this past Wednesday.  The 8s went to work with the Ks (or on their 8th grade project if they are/were behind) and were able to further work on their mentoring skills.  One thing I love about MRA is the community we strive to build in our classrooms and between the grades!

Bump-up day allows us to start looking at placements for the 5s coming up.  Please know that we will make the best combinations we can, thinking first and foremost about what will be best for each and every student.  Final placements will not be announced until later in the summer.  If you have questions or concerns about placements, please contact the director.
