Homeroom Weekly News 5/14 - 5/18

Hey homeroom,

As I sit here humming Adele after our MRA Showcase, I can’t help but be thankful for the opportunity I have to work with such wonderful, talented students!  I love every minute of it.  Our students have a real sense of community in our class (as a few even mentioned in Community Meeting this week, “We’re like a family in here,” and I agree).

Our homeroom is beginning to wrap up the end of the year.  We spent the week preparing for
Greenstock, starting the final stretch of our Portfolio writing, and trying to enjoy every last little bit of time we have left with each other.  Summer is fast approaching, but we still have three good weeks together.  I need everyone’s best attention and focus these next three weeks as we finish all of our projects and prepare for Graduation and next year!

I’m also thinking of getting a 8th grade only event planned the last week (or weekend) of school.  I’m talking with the other teachers before I set the date, but I’d like to have students for a campfire complete with hot dogs (even a few vegetarian ones, Raelene), marshmallows, and, of course, SONGS! I’m hoping to create an atmosphere that is fun, but also transitional. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on their year(s) here at MRA and their imminent transition into High School.  If you’re interested in being a part of this, let me know.  (I’ll mention this in the Science Weekly News as well, as it will be open to all 8s.)

So much to do, so little time.  I’m really going to miss all of them this summer….

Wednesday, May 23rd

I am really happy that the end of the year is coming, but I can't wait. We still have to finish all of the portfolio stuff, the final science project, plus anything else we have. I am really glad that the portfolios are coming to an end, we worked really hard on them. I can't wait to finish the science project; it is going to be fun!

The portfolio is so stressful. It was really fun though. My portfolio is going to be so much better next year.

Thank you so much, Mrs. N for having us do portfolios this year. It was a great experience to put together something like this and step back and see all our growth as students.

Thank you Mrs Nilsen for giving us (especially the 8th graders) the opportunity to make portfolios this year. With the skill that you have given us, I KNOW that it will help us later in life....like with documentation of our high-school years, college applications/interviews, and job applications/interviews.They are also an amazing (sorry, I know, an extremely overused word) way to look back and see the progress and what we have accomplished this year, or each year.

Wow, an entire year has just flown by. I am really glad portfolios are this close to being over with. Although the experiance was priceless. I can really see this as a skill I will use during my highschool career. We really couldn't ask for a cooler teacher Mrs. Nilsen!
Thank you!

I thought it was a great idea for us to do portfolios this year. I like to look through it and see all of the projects and work we have done. Next year I don't want to procrastinate as much as I did over this school year. I'm happy though, that were almost done with them.

I liked doing the portfolios this year. We got to make them whatever we wanted. We got to put anything we wanted into it. It was a good way for us to show off all the good work that we have done this year.

Portfolio was hard, but I think it was a good experience. I am so glad that I finished it on time. I almost forgot how good it felt to have no portfolio to work on.
