Writing Cycle Week 2

Developing Writer's Workshop
A few of our staff met during the second term for a book group. We chose to read "Writer's Workshop for the Common Core" to spur discussion and prepare for a more holistic implementation of the new writing standards with the Common Core. If none of that teacher-mumbo-jumbo I just rattled off makes sense to you, let me translate: Our staff is working overtime in becoming better teachers of writing.
These past few weeks I've been implementing a writing structure and curriculum that different classrooms are fully adopting next year. We've been working on a number of drafts of persuasive writing samples, and will be choosing one of them to take to full publication in the upcoming weeks. This past week we worked on "1st Draft #2." In addition to drafting, we've had mini lessons on pre-writing, brainstorming, and other lessons related to the writing process. I'm excited to learn more about running an effective Writer's Workshop this summer and who knows, perhaps next year at an education night, you might get to come and participate in one yourself.
Our first prompt was about whether girls and boys should play on the same sports teams. This weeks prompt was about whether TV is educational or not. Be sure to ask your student what they think about these topics and how they are defending their opinions in writing!
