Touch Someone Who - Community Building

Weekly Homeroom News 11/5 - 11/9

Community Building

I believe that building community in my classroom is the #1 most important part of my job.  Yes, I teach Science and ELA...and I LOVE it, but it is my personal believe that building self-esteem/worth and a sense of community is part of my purpose in life.  We've been getting to know each other more and more in community meeting, but now its time to push further.  What takes us from being classmates and acquaintances to being more of a family that deeply care for each other.  I believe it is extremely important to teach empathy, connection, and similarities.

Touch Someone Who

I have this activity I've used with a variety of groups of all ages over the years.  It's fantastic for getting students to see that people in the class actually care about them and see them in a positive light.  It's been very powerful experience in the past and I loved sharing it with my homeroom today.  It gives students to compliment each other in an anonymous way.  Ask your student about how they felt during our last activity of the week.

Portfolio Work - Essential Knowledge

We are also working on building our evidence in our portfolio.  Students worked on their essential knowledge section this week, getting a minimum of five pieces of evidence in there.  We'll be starting reflections soon, so it's good to get a head start on compiling good evidence on which to reflect.  It's slow going, but very rewarding work to look back on what we've done, and where we've come from and see how we can make ourselves, our work, and our productions better in the future.
