Reading Logs and half-way through Wrinkle

Weekly ELA News 10/22 - 10/26

I wish I had hours more with your students!  There's so much to cover and so little time.  If I can just figure out that tesseract...

Reading Logs

Reading logs were due this past Friday, October 28th.  Unfortunately, only a handful of students turned them in.  I'm afraid we'll have a full homework club on Tuesday.  If students lost their log, they can always print off another reading long on Engrade.  There are always ways to be proactive about our work.  I really appreciate the students who figured out how to get their assignment turned in, even if they had questions or did something wrong.  I'm always willing to help students do better in the future.  Let's make our November Reading logs better.

For those parents who have not heard at all about our reading logs, students are to be reading at home 3 times a week minimum.  They simply track their reading and you sign it at the end of the month to ensure integrity.  Students also answer a few analysis questions about a book (or two) they read during the month.  Let me know if you have any questions about how to complete our reading log.  Looking forward to all those reading logs being turned in on Monday.

Wrinkle Update - Chapter 1-6

We just finished Chapter 6 of A Wrinkle in Time on Friday.  We're half-way through folks!  That means things are starting to heat up.  All terms and summary pages are due on Monday.  We will also be having a quiz next week about this past unit (Ch 4-6).  Students are allowed to use their summary pages and their book to help them on quizzes.  Students are also allowed to take their books home to re-read (or read any parts they missed if they were absent).  We've had such lively discussion about the book already.  I'm excited to dive deeper into the plot after conferences and our short break.

We're learning about different Literary Analysis elements every chapter.  For any parents (or student) who wants a list we've covered:
  • Ch 1 - Point of View
  • Ch 2 - Characterization
  • Ch 3 - Imagery
  • Ch 4 - Mood
  • Ch 5 - Plot
  • Ch 6 - Figurative language (simile/metaphor)
I just love reading with our students.  They can be quite insightful and deep when prompted.  Thank you for sharing them with me.

I'm looking forward to our conferences next week and checking in with parents.  If you're wondering about how conferences are working this year, check out my Parent Teacher Conferences blog post.  Enjoy your weekend!
