Reading Non-fiction Literature

Weekly Science News - 10/1-10/5

I know what you're thinking.  Mrs. Nilsen is crazy and is mixing her ELA and Science blog up...but NO!  This week in Science, we spent our time doing that crazy activity we usually see in English class: READING!  I brought over 100 science books from the Multnomah County Library by my house down to our classroom for students to learn from.  Our students are going to have to do research at different points during the year and need tools and strategies for decoding, comprehending, and analyzing non-fiction literature.  We learned how to quickly "steal" information from browsing a text (THIEVES strategy - used for previewing and selecting good non-fiction literature).

The latter part of the week focused on organizing the information we learned from non-fiction texts.  We looked at four different graphic organizers and learned how each can be used to sort key information, main ideas, cool facts, and important concepts.  Students are now using Venn Diagrams, KWL charts, and other organizers to prepare for a book report on a space/solar system topic of their choice.  We will continue our exploration of non-fiction science literature next week.
