One more week!?! (and important end-of-the-year info)

Homeroom Weekly News 5/29-5/31

Just three short days this week and next week is our last full week together!  It's so hard to believe.  As a writing assignment, the 8th graders began working on their "Goodbye Post" to MRA.  They are to write a final goodbye to all of the students, teachers, and staff on here so that parents and community members can share the experiences they've had.  Post will be published between Monday, June 4th and Friday, June 8th.  Be sure to read/comment on them and let the 8s know how much we will miss them.
Students also worked this week on those last stages of getting our Portfolios ready to show.  We had a self and peer scoring time this week, allowing students to help each other better our products.  Portfolios will receive their teacher grade next week.  The showcase is going to be a trial run, as next year we will launch Portfolios school wide, but I'm very proud of the progress our students made this year.  They're quite amazing to see.  I hope many members of the community can come to the Showcase, which will coienside the 8th grade project presentations (see schedule below).

Just a few things that need to be addressed/asked as we approach the end of the school year.

1) Graduation Announcements – Announcements were sent home with seniors last week.  Each 8th grader was given four announcements (printed in color, in nice envelopes) to give to family and friends.  We wanted to make sure parents knew those came home, just in case you haven’t seen them yet.  I would also like for formally invite you and your familes to please join us for our afternoon celebration of student work, perseverance, and creativity.  We would love to have as many parents, community members, and family spend the afternoon with us.  Contact Ms. Annie Erickson if you have any questions regarding graduation.

1:00 pm - Projects and Portfolios on Display (Quonset Hut and Breezeway)
2:00 pm - 2nd group of Senior Presentations (Guonset Hut)
3:00 pm - Dismissal of School Day
3:30 pm - Reception (Gym)
4:00 pm - Graduation Ceremony (Gym)

2) 8s only campfire – I would really like to have a fun (and serious), intentional time for the 8th graders as they transition away from MRA.  Monday the 11th will be full to the brim with speeches, portfolio showcase, and the actual graduation ceremony.  I would like to have just the 8th graders for a campfire on Thursday, June 7th.  I’m looking for ideas of places (Fryer park was one mentioned to me) we could go, roast some hot dogs and marshmallows for dinner, sing silly songs, transition down into some slower, serious songs, and have a time of safe sharing.  The other team teachers will also be coming.  While I would love to invite the entire 6/7/8s, I think it’s important that we honor just the 8s and give them some time to talk about their transition.  It also becomes such a huge event when it grows from 20 students, to 65….  Any ideas/suggestions/questions at this stage are helpful.  A permission slip will be sent out as soon as we have the detail hammered out.  If you are interested in helping in any way, let me know.

3) Emails vs. Website and communication survey – I’m working on building a survey to see where parents are in how they prefer to receive information from the school.  I was sending out weekly emails.  Now I’m typing weekly updates on our blog.  I curious to find out how many parents read their emails/the blog/check the website/would prefer printed copies etc.  I’m planning on sending out a SurveyMonkey survey on Monday next week and would appreciate as many responses as possible (even if your child is an 8th grader and you won’t be affected by changes I make  in regards to communication next year).  The survey will be anonymous and will aid me in better meeting the needs of our specific community.  Thank you in advance for participating in the survey.

4) 8s pictures – Parent’s of 8th graders!  We would love to include younger pictures of your child on our slideshow at graduation, but we can only do it with you help.  Send any pictures you would like to see on the slideshow to Ms. Erickson asap!

5) Field Day - Field day is going to be on our last day of school, June 12th, and I’m looking for a few parent volunteers who would be willing to help with the volleyball station I’m in running.  Any takers?  Here’s the schedule for the day.  *Note: there is a rainy day plan in case of bad weather.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed for beautiful skies and good times!

8:15 – 8:30: Morning Meeting (in regular classroom)
8:35 -9:45am -  Rotations 1, 2, and 3 with Buddy Family
9:45 – 10am - break in regular classroom for snack
10 – 11:10 am - Rotations 4, 5, and 6 with Buddy Family
11:15am – 12:30pm – Lunch/Recess
12:30 – 1pm – Popsicles with all families on the Soccer Field
1 – 1:30pm – Clean up and go home!

Let me know if you’d be interested in helping during any point of the day.  It’s going to be a blast!

6) Final Reports and Summer Suggestions - Teachers are compiling information and ideas into our Summative Final Reports for the 8th graders who are graduating, and summer suggestions for our 6th and 7th graders who will be returning next year.  Final Reports will be mailed home on Friday, June 15th.  Suggestions for 6th and 7th graders will be sent home with them on the 12th.  I'll post the suggestions on the blog and on the Homeroom page for easy access all summer long.
